An executive counsellor was hired by Atlassian to try and salvage the professional relationship between Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar after a personal falling out over their neighbouring Sydney harbour-front properties.
Atlassian’s board intervened by introducing Silicon Valley mediator Peter Finkelstein, but the hostilities could not be resolved and Mr Cannon-Brookes consolidated power to emerge as sole CEO of the $US58bn software company.
“Scott was shafted,” says one Sydney business identity close to Australia’s third and fourth-richest people. Neither man would dispute the rift on the record, but representatives of the pair sought to minimise the tensions which extended to Annie Cannon-Brookes, who is separated from Mr Cannon-Brookes, and Kim Jackson, who is married to Mr Farquhar.
