Common Jira Questions

Recommended Posts

  • Owner

When working with Jira I often get several questions over and over again. These are common questions and usually they come from a misunderstanding of what Jira is and/or how it works. This is a list of the most common questions I get and the thought is to answer all of them and then link these questions to those answers. Kind of like a FAQ.

  1. How can we set up our Jira project to manage multiple teams?
  2. How can we move tasks between projects and still keep track of what need to be done?
  3. Should we have one long workflow (business need -> release) or multiple short workflows?
  4. How can I work with requirements in Jira?
  5. Should you have one or multiple backlogs?
  6. What is the difference between Kanban board and Scrum board?
  7. What type of board should I use?
  8. How can I use Jira to track releases?
  9. How can I use Jira as a Test Tool?
  10. How can I as a manager get an overview of what is going on in my projects?
  11. How can I work with SAFe in Jira?

What other common questions do you often hear? Let me know and I will add it here.

My assignment was to review and build a new work process with JIRA & Confluence as tools for the development efforts at Axfood. Based on the SAFE agile process with practical experience in making projects actually become a reality I built a process that was custom-made for Axfood and their specific challenges.

I was the team lead for the front end development team doing the redesign of all H&M brands on the new Hybris platform.

Working with H&M we needed to build a new way of working within Accenture as we had 3 companies that had never worked together before: Fjord, Brightstep and Accenture Italy. I built a completely new delivery workflow from design to frontend and then to backend in Jira and Confluence. In total I spent over 500 hours building and training the teams with great result. This was extra difficult due to the fact that we built design for 6 brands and one was under NDA and not open to Fjord for one of the projects.

We also built a pattern library so we could work according to atomic design for both development and design. This was accompanied by a delivery pipeline to the backend team for a very smooth development process.
