From a technical architecture perspective Atlassian either have made some substantial technical changes or we still have foundation structures such as Jira, Confluence and even Align that all have their own codebases and platforms?

While I personally find it weird to refer to SaaS items as products, since they are Services, I do not think it makes sense to change from product to app. These are not mobile software, they are SaaS services. In a restructured architecture where you have an underlying infrastructure that these services are plug and play type of entities, that is what we use the term Module for.

This would provide a more logical holistic nomenclature where you have the foundation infrastructure, Platforms on top of that with Modules that provides the services and then plugins that extend the functionality of the modules.

- Infrastructure (Atlassian Cloud)

- Platform (Jira)

- Module (Jira, Jira Service Management)

- Plugin (marketplace "apps")

Naming two different types of items the same is not a good practice. I can already hear the confusion: "This is an app for the Jira app and no, it is not a mobile app, you have to install it on your SaaS... App."

Consider this change carefully because like Issues this will probably stick with you for the next 20 years or so, and it will be a pain in the... to change it again. Until you do, this will confuse people that actually think words matter.

--

Now, please change the term "project" for Jira while you are at it since that is misguiding, and it adds a lot of confusion to a community of users that don't even know the difference between a project and an initiative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8NqP8RBYOM

Atlassian Data Center products will be gone in 2028

As Atlassian announced Private Cloud in 2026 and with the recent changes where Atlassian no longer allow multiyear renewal of DC licenses and with DC certifications being discontinued, I think it is safe to assume that Atlassian Data Center will be gone soon.

I predict an announcement in 2026 about this with EOL at 2028.

What do you think?

Atlassian Teams '25 - are we seeing a completely new Atlassian being born?

Teams '25 had some very interesting things being presented, and I find the things that were not said to be more interesting than what was actually said in some cases.

For example, they just announced the new organization of their products, which is now called apps btw, a lot, but they did not explain the pretty substantial change in architecture or classification of their products and services? Collections are new, as is the collections and the grouping of the Atlassian products, but they just slid that in there casually...

Speaking of the collections, it feels that Atlassian is really trying to get into the Strategic segment, but in a very strange way?

Rovo is now the core of all Atlassian product apps. For over 20 years Jira has been the core in one way or the other, but now Rovo and the teamwork graph has replaced Jira. I think that is rather significant?

The cloud platform is now splitting up into three products and Loom is becoming a core app for Atlassian alongside Jira and Confluence. Rovo Agents are now the new Automation on steroids and with more and more AI added every day I think most Atlassian product admins need to shift towards solution engineering rather than just servant configuration?

Overall I think Teams 2024 was a massive shift, but 2025 seem to take that even further?

Is this a new Atlassian we are watching being born?

The appointment of Brian Duffy as Atlassian’s new Chief Revenue Officer

In the letter to the shareholders they make a big fuss about Brian Duffy, who is stepping in as the new Chief Revenue Officer.

While it makes sense that there is a lot of focus on revenue in the stakeholder’s letter, it does concern me a bit that they make such a big fuss about this particular role.

Is this where we see more focus on making as much money as possible, or is it just for the stakeholders you think?

Work Life by Atlassian

Our Q1 FY25 letter to shareholders - Work Life by Atlassian

An update to customers, stakeholders, and shareholders on our mission to unleash the potential in every team.

Strengthening Executive Leadership

As part of continuing to seize the opportunities ahead, particularly in the enterprise, we are thrilled to announce the appointment of Brian Duffy as Atlassian’s new Chief Revenue Officer. Brian’s experience in sales transformations is vast with nearly two decades in the technology industry. Brian spent 18 years at SAP, and in his role as President of Cloud, Brian launched, built, and scaled ‘RISE with SAP’, a strategic initiative to move customers to the cloud. Through agility, focus, and innovative migration practices, Brian was able to grow RISE from an initiative to a multi-billion dollar business in the span of two years.

Brian took that experience to his most recent role as CEO of SoftwareOne where he set the company up for its next phase of growth and deepened relationships with customers and partners. Beyond the leadership Brian will bring in Sales and Customer Success, his public company CEO experience will bring unique depth and breadth to our amazing exec team.

Brian will officially join us on January 1, 2025. We can’t wait to have him join the team.

I’m pleased with the progress we’ve made in the first quarter of FY25 and continue to be optimistic about the significant opportunities ahead. Our years of effort in building a world-class cloud platform are paying off, particularly in the AI era. Our System of Work philosophy is increasingly being adopted by technology-driven organizations, and our products continue to be the cornerstone for how millions of teams get work done.

It’s the unique combination of the Atlassian platform, our System of Work philosophy, our AI strategy and our portfolio of products that gives me confidence in our ability to achieve our mission of unleashing the potential of every team.

-Mike
