    How will large organizations handle next-gen projects in Jira Cloud?

    Atlassian is continuing to push for their cloud services and many new and innovative features for Jira Cloud are added to the new next-gen project type. This is the most open and flexible project type ever created for Jira cloud, which can cause serious headache for large organizations.

    "In next-gen, projects are entirely independent from one another, meaning you can change something in one project and it won’t impact anything in another. In next-gen, workflows live within projects and will be tied to specific issue types. So for example you could have a specific workflow for your bugs and another workflow for your stories. Because the projects are entirely independent from one another, it gives teams more autonomy to adjust and continuously optimize their workflows without impacting other teams or having to bother administrators." - NextGen roadmap

    The total freedom to create your own workflows and customize the way you work is a dream come true for many project owners. For method and process offices however they are a nightmare unless you are one of the few enterprise companies that actually work with work processes in Jira on a daily basis.

    Many of the companies I meet struggle to even maintain a common way of working with a strict workflow policy. The idea of letting every project getting the power to create their own way of working could be a nightmare for those companies. So what can you do to control the way of working so people can work cross projects and still allow for freedom and autonomy within the projects?

    I believe in education and freedom under responsibility.

    That being said I think that next-gen should not be treated any different than Jira in general. If you have a defined way of working, and I do not mean what words you should use based on methodology, but an actual way of working. Then teach the users. As long as the way of working makes sense to the users, then they will naturally follow it.

    You also need coaches to support the teams. This is important, not just because we want to give the teams the best possible chance to succeed, but also so we can capture new ideas and improvements to the way of working. This way we can continuously improve the way we work together.

    If there is one change I would like to see in large organizations, then it is to have a proper center for way of working: The WOW office. Many have similar offices, but they almost always follow a top-down approach where they focus on processes and methods. The concept of defining a method rather than asking the users how they want to work is for me a complete waste of time.  I see so many companies focusing on defining words instead of describing what is actually done. So I would suggest a bottom-up approach with each capability having it's own organizations.

    If you have proper support for the teams and you have a healthy WOW office that can train the teams on how to use the tools in your organization, then you are going to have a great time. If you on the other side do not have a WOW office with a defined way of working that is aligned with the users or a support organization to train and support the teams....then do not allow the creation of next-gen projects in your organization.

    Next-gen projects have the potential to fracture your organization, or form mega projects with thousands of users. It can form barriers making working cross projects impossible and lead to customizations that will quickly make life hard for everyone. This is the same issue many organizations face when they have a loose policy for customizations, but with next-gen projects you will loose any possibility to control the way each and every project will define their work processes.

    With the push from Atlassian towards Cloud and the changes to licensing models for large organizations this is not something you need to look at in the future. This is a reality now and you better prepare for it before you end up in a bad situation.

    Next-gen projects is the future. With right preparation and investment I think it will supercharge your teams to a productivity and creativity that you have never seen before. Make sure you have a plan for it and how to align all that power to a common way of working without crippling the teams autonomy.

    I think for now the regular project will not be replaced as the nextgen project do not have the full functionality of the standard ones. In the future I am sure that this is a shift that can become standard in 5-10 years if the clients like it.

    I think the architecture is different for next-gen so the customizations may not have as much impact as the standard ones.

      The requests to get Portfolio for Jira for Cloud users have been loud and finally Atlassian released a Cloud version. They also made a very odd choice to rename Portfolio for Jira to Advanced Roadmaps and place it behind the Cloud Premium barrier.
      Portfolio for Jira has long been the better choice for Jira Server and Jira DC users. The features have been perfectly suited for managers to keep an overview over large programs and initiatives with relative ease. As such it has been the envy of Cloud users for years and it comes as no surprise that Atlassian would port this to Cloud given their focus on the cloud platform lately.
      Renaming Portfolio for Jira is also no surprise as it confuse managers with two portfolio products where the high level Portfolio tool Jira Align is the product Atlassian seem to want to focus on. Renaming it to Advanced Roadmaps is however a very strange choice as it is not a simple roadmap tool. It also make the naming confusion shift from Portfolio to Roadmaps as Cloud users have been using the limited Roadmaps feature for quite some time.
      The new Advanced Roadmaps is only available for Cloud Premium users. This makes sense as Atlassian want to push users into their new price model. Currently there is not much that would warrant double the price for Cloud Premium so Atlassian need something that is enticing enough for users to make the shift. Advanced Roadmaps could be one of those features, but they need more as Advanced Roadmaps cost $2.3/user and month at it's lowest level and Cloud Premium cost an additional $7/user and month.
      Feature wise Advanced Roadmaps is still great with the two main selling points of great overview and the ability to scale the issues with more levels. Here are some of the selling points from Atlassian:
      With the changes coming to Roadmaps where all projects will get them, and not just Next-Gen projects, combined with the promise that Advanced Roadmaps will somehow be connected to a more comprehensive whole this could be a pretty good thing for Cloud Premium users. Adding Advanced Roadmaps to Cloud Premium will now add the ability to scale issue types beyond the standard 3 levels, which is something people have asked for for a very long time.

      Will it be enough to warrant the high price tag for Cloud Premium? I doubt that as Advanced Roadmaps is only really useful when you pass a certain number of teams. Doubling the price tag will probably discourage most low to mid-range clients. The fact that you can only have a 7 day test version and that you need to setup a new cloud instance to even test this if you are on a regular cloud plan is also a problem. With more features added into Cloud Premium however I think more and more will make the shift over to that.
      Overall this is a good new addition and package it with the Cloud Premium offer will make it more accessible and therefore used, which is a good thing. It's a bit sad to see Atlassian being so aggressive in their way of forcing cloud users into their Premium tier that is making some old customers a bit annoyed, but I think it will be good in the long run.

      For users that have Atlassian Access or a Premium plan of Jira Software, Jira Service Desk, Jira Core, and Confluence a new feature have been released called Organization insights. In it's first iteration we get two charts that help us understand and predict product usage.
      The new feature called Organization insights is starting out with two charts, but more are coming. The idea behind Organization insights is to give insight into the usage of your products. These two charts can be used to:
      Identify adoption trends of specific products throughout your organization Understand and forecast product usage in the future Make data-driven decisions to increase usage in certain departments or use cases. Understand whether your license should be adjusted based on user activity Compare spending on various products against each other Quickly understand which users are inactive and should be deactivated.
      Organization Insights is available for Jira Software, Jira Service Desk, Jira Core, and Confluence  for anyone with a Premium plan or have Atlassian Access.  To access your organization's insights, you must be an organization admin. From your organization at admin.atlassian.com, select Security > Insights.

      Som så många andra älskar jag Jira Software Cloud på min iPhone och jag använder en webbläsare när jag jobbar på min Mac. Det kommer att ändras snart för Atlassian har annonserat på Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference att Jira Software Cloud får en egen app till Mac senare i år!
      Förutom det faktum att Jira Software Cloud kommer att dra full nytta av macOS som notifieringar, keyboard shortcuts, spotlight sökningar, drag and drop, toolbars och så vidare, så kommer du även att synka mellan dina olika enheter.

      Automation in Jira have long been requested by the customers and now it is finally here for all Jira Cloud customers. This new feature is actually not new, but it is the popular Automation for Jira app that was purchased by Atlassian in 2019. Not only is this an amazing addition, it is also completely free for all Jira Cloud users.
      Automation for Jira was purchased by Atlassian back in October 2019 and in March 2020 the automation functionality was made available natively to every single Jira Cloud instance at every tier. In late March the first DevOps triggers was released with the promise of new functionality coming soon. For server users there is still the old app for now.
      With the new automation feature that is built into Jira Cloud you can now automate a lot of actions. Not only will this free up time for you and your team, it is also super easy to setup with no coding what so ever!
      This is pretty impressive of course, but when you extend this across other products like Bitbucket and Github, then you get something very nice indeed. I have used the Automation for Jira app before and really liked it's simple, yet powerful features. It is really, really good that this now comes as a standard feature for all Jira Cloud customers.

      Atlassian has now announced that the cloud versions of Jira Software, Confluence, Jira Service Desk, and Jira Core will be available for small teams for free. This extent the free offer for small teams where Atlassian already offer free licenses for Trello, Bitbucket and Opsgenie.
      This announcement is not unexpected, but it comes with great timing now that so many are forced to work on remote due to the Corona situation. Allowing small companies the opportunity to collaborate using Jira, Confluence and Service Desk is a great opportunity to get organized for remote work.
      The licenses that are now free are the same tier as the ones that was previously available for $10. That means that you get Jira, Opsgenie and Confluence with 10 users for free. For Jira Service Desk you get 3 agents for free as well. This may seem small, but for many small companies this will be a welcome solution to get organized for remote work for free.
      If you already have a license for these tiers, then you can go into your administration section and change the plans under manage subscriptions. Just click on change next to your current plan and select the free plan.
